After leaving behind her career as an Authorized Ashtanga yoga teacher, running a successful yoga business, Sophie recreated herself by reconnecting to her intuition and learning to listen more attentively to the signs and messages she was receiving from her body.
She shares her wisdom with us today, and why she’s made female self-empowerment a pillar of her coaching practice. You’ll hear about her personal journey and some of the ways she works with clients to reclaim a connection with sensuality, and find freedom from society pressures to look younger or slimmer, while supporting them to step into the next chapter with a greater sense of confidence and beauty.

South African born, Tarin Calmeyer, is a Virtual Corporate Wellness Specialist. She’s the founder and chief wellness office of Los Angles-based company: Remote Team Wellness.
We catch up with her living her dream life in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico!
Today, we’re talking about the importance of taking time for self-care and some easy ways to improve your mental health.
After traveling extensively as a young girl with her missionary parents, she moved to the U.S for for high school and immersed herself into becoming a professional dancer. However, that dream suddenly ended when she experienced a debilitating injury at a critical stage in her career. Tarin was forced to carve out her own path of healing turning to yoga and osteopathy, where she discovered a new passion for mind-body integration. Recognizing that the body has an innate ability to heal, she trained as an Osteopath herself.
All of this has contributed to the work she’s doing now, consulting for huge, well-known companies such as Netflix, Meta (Facebook) and Cisco to support their employees’ mental health. She continues to promote remote wellness today.

Do you want to experience the next level of freedom? Then learn to merge your analytical brain with your intuition in a systematic way through syncing your life with your menstrual cycle. Learn to predict your energy so you can reliably know when it’s a “hell yes” or a “hell no!”
Menstruation is a topic we seem to talk a lot about as Ashtanga yoga practitioners. Our personal “moon days” as women, whether to take rest, or practice, whether this is a misogynistic tradition or something truly helpful, is a long debated subject.
But did you know that lifestyle, exercise, and productivity research is almost entirely based on what is optimal for male bodies.
And you know what?
The Yoga tradition is no different!
In today’s episode we’re talking with Cycle-Syncing coach, Briana Villegas. We’re learning what benefits we might discover (as women), when we start to align our to-do list with our biologically driven energy shifts, so we can spend more time being in flow-state, rather than feeling trapped in hustle-culture.
But this conversation isn’t only for women… You see, men will learn a lot too about their own hormonal cycling that happens over a 24 hour period and how to utilize the natural ups and downs of their energy each day.
Social awareness around menstrual health is on the rise, but it’s not enough for the conversation to stop at normalizing symptoms. We have to learn to listen deeper to our innate wisdom.
Briana Villegas has combine her background as a behavioral scientist and her personal experience with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), to create a powerful cycle-syncing formula.
We’re so excited to share her wisdom and experience with you in this episode!

Kerri Kelly: American Detox

Sunday Oct 09, 2022

Sunday Oct 09, 2022

The last time Russell saw Kerri Kelly they were getting robbed together on Chamundi Hill outside of Mysore, India. For Russ it was the best trip he ever had to India. Imagine an episode of West Wing where one of the communications staffers working for Josh Lyman took a yoga side-trip while on an important diplomatic tour, and got stuck in India with no money, passport, or visa. No way to leave the country and no way to stay. “DONNA!!!” Listen to this #funnynotfunny tale, as Kerri and Russell pulled every string and lever they knew to get this staffer out of the country!
Ten years later, Kerri has written an amazing book that speaks to our times Part of our self-care is how we talk care of one another. American Detox: The Myth of Wellness And How we can Truly Heal.
What we understand to be wellness now, has become divorced from it’s origin, commodified, and sold as a luxury items that even the 99% struggle to afford.
Wellness isn’t just self-care rituals, like yoga or meditation, but it’s a living wage, a home, food, and basic human needs. It’s not just what you buy in lululemon, it’s all the ways we fight and advocate for healthy living conditions, so that all can get what they truly need.
“The myth of wellness is a lie. And until we learn to confront and dismantle its toxic systems, we can’t ever be well.” -Kerri Kelly
The industry soars upwards of $650 billion a year, but we’re still isolated, insecure, and inequitable. “Wellness” isn’t making us well; it’s making us worse!
It diverts our attention and holds us back from asking the questions that do help us heal: Who gets to be well in America? Who’s harmed--and who's left out? And what’s the real-life cost of our obsession with self-improvement?

Kintsugi with Mae Yoshikawa

Sunday Sep 25, 2022

Sunday Sep 25, 2022

Kintsugi means “golden journey.” It’s the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by binding the pieces back together with lacquer mixed with powdered gold. As a philosophy, it treats the breakage and repair of something as part of the history of an object, rather than something to be disguised, discarded and forgotten.
This is exactly what Mae Yoshikawa has courageously done with the pieces of her life’s story, time and time again. And what remains is the most exquisite work of art to behold.
We dive into a discussion of what feminine spirituality looks like. Just as her inspiration, the late guru Sri Anandamayi Ma, our guest today, Mae Yoshikawa, also embodies this eternal nature of divine joy.
One of the most pleasurable things about speaking with Mae, besides that ineffable joy mentioned above, is her acute insight into her own personality, and her own pain.
She speaks eloquently about how much she embraces the delicious rudeness of the American side of her personality when speaking English; which is quite different from the modest, proper clarity that comes from speaking Japanese. And, how now she seeks to integrate the two sides of herself into one professional person of the world.
Late in today’s episode, Mae speaks about her status as a widow and what that means for her as well (be sure to listen all the way… so not to miss both the beautiful and tragic events that broke her heart wide open).
Her ability to recognize her suffering and orchestrate her healing, and then to unfurl that joy in her and in all of us, is an absolute inspiration to us humans.
Mae is an author, yoga & meditation practitioner, teacher, and mother. In 2006, Mae became the first Japanese woman to be authorized by KPJAYI, the founding school of Ashtanga Yoga in India. Having graced 42 consecutive covers and penning a widely popular column for Japanese Yogini magazine from 2003~2013, Mae helped to spearhead a cultural shift in Japan—making sure that yoga would not be seen merely as physical exercise, but rather as a holistic practice and lifestyle that would restore health and balance to the busy lives of modern people. Currently, she is known as the face of adidas yoga as well as being the founder of vedatokyo.com, a premier online studio that offers yoga, zazen, and a variety of other wellness programs.

Kayoko was born in Tokyo as the country was rebuilding after WWII. She moved many times with her family to different parts of Japan, as her father was transferred to various jobs within the banking industry. She grew up in a very traditional Japanese family, which meant she intimately experienced the differences between how girls were treated compared with boys. For example, she explained her dismay to her mother as her brother was put in a far superior school then she was, and he mother simply said “this is the way it is.”
In 2006, Kayoko became fascinated with yoga asana and philosophy. It occurred to her that she could use her abilities to help others. Her heart was calling her to reach the under-served women and children of India, those who lived in the motherland of her dear Yoga.
In the beginning it started off as simply an idea of offering one yoga class to help raise money to support women and children in India. At the time, Kayoko had no idea that this tiny calling of her heart would expand and grow into a global movement that is now called “Yoga Gives Back.”
Her passion to give voice to the voiceless has changed the lives of so many women and children, and birthed the mantra — “For the cost of one yoga class, you can change a life. “
After doing a documentary on Microfinancing with Dr. Muhammad Yunus, from Bangladesh (who was the winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize) she realized that if you give $10/month to women in India through small loans (which the traditional banking industry would never offer) you could not only change the life of the woman who received the money, but the future of her children, and her community, because she will employee other women, who will reinvest in their children.
Now, her dream has become a non-profit organization called: Yoga Gives Back. It has supporting communities in over 30 different countries. Over the last 15 years, Yoga Gives Back has empowered over 2400 mothers and children in India. Their programs advance women’s rights and interrupt the cycle of poverty by empowering women and children in India with basic education, scholarships for higher education, and microloans for businesses.
Buddha Nature is something Kayoko embodies and we are so happy to share her benevolence and abundantly open-heart with you here today!

We are delighted to introduce you to our dear friend Krista Shirley. Currently residing in Orlando, Florida, Russell met her years ago, while recruiting teachers for the Jois Foundation. Harmony insists she knew her first (and evidently all our friends knew Harmony first and better!) - LOL
Krista is a voracious learner and she takes this infectious energy, AAA-type personality, to her whole life, business, motherhood, and Ashtanga yoga practice. If it can be said of anyone, it has never been more true when it comes to Krista: She embodies the energy of Wonder Woman.
It’s always a shock for a lady like this to be confronted with a truly obliterating obstacle. Krista incurred a debilitating should injury. She tried many therapeutic interventions, nothing worked. She couldn’t lift her arm. She went through a series of seven surgeries in the time span of a year, which left her paralyzed by pain, and completely without any ability to practice the physical aspect of yoga.
And so… What does one have left after that? Who are you? What are you? What’s next?
In this episode, Krista answers all these questions and we find out so much more!

Kaitlyn Rose Holsapple believes that the body is our most sacred guide. Her work now is focused on helping others integrate their past pains so these hidden shadows no longer subconsciously drive the choices in life. As a Somatic Yoga Therapist, she helps clients connect with the innate, intuitive wisdom of the body. This wisdom is present in “every” body, and helps up to organically move stages of healing.
Our guest today, Kaitlyn, is someone who recovered from PTSD as a result of being victimized by sexual assault. Prior to this she had always felt disassociated from her body, due to experiencing sexual abuse as a young child, which surfaced through her healing journey through yoga and somatic therapy. The steps she took on her own healing journey has informed her understanding that the path of personal integration can often feel confusing and dark. As a teacher of somatic yoga therapy, she knows intimately how we need experienced guides to help us shine light onto the painful shadow side of ourselves and many of those experiences we would rather not look at.
We’re talking about sexuality, pleasure, intimacy, plant medicines, trauma, healing, and what it takes to become whole.

Miranda followed a jagged path to personal freedom. Eventually escaping an abusive relationship with her two young boys in tow, she found strength in weight-training and emotional healing through her Ashtanga yoga practice.
It wasn’t an easy road that guided her into leadership coaching and Human Design, but it was exactly the path she needed to develop an internal sense of ease and love for herself, which she now so skilfully offers to others.
